EFFECT OF GOOD COMPANY
It was the incident of one winter evening of December of early eighties. Subir want to Badkulla of Nadia district accompanied with a team of artists of a musical school. He loved music but was not a player of it, whether it was an instrumental or vocal one. He however used to spend about and hour every week in their school to enjoy their program. The member of the team were naturally all his friends. On request from them he accompanied them with a view to enjoying their program there. They reached there half an hour earlier before their scheduled time.
They preferred spending the time amongst the audience to staving in a guest room meant for them and desired to enjoy the program of artists performing before their turn. Sitting among the artists Subir was enjoying the facilities allotted for the artists . as every body's attention was fixed on the program of the artists of Kolkata, the audience was looking at them off and on. He was enjoy it very much. Sharp at 6-30 p.m. the announcer invited the artist from Kolkata to to come in the stage. Then Subir felt very uneasy to stay alone among the audience and be identified as a useless extra of the team. He sportingly requested the team leader to allow him to share Dias with them and enjoy the honour of an artist. He informed that for his long association with them, he knew every line of every song the would sing in the function. He reiterated that he could manage it with lip service.
to honour his sportsmanship spirit the team leader agreed to include him in his team. Within a very short time he found himself on the stage. The team presented their program for half and hour. There a pain- drop silence while their performances were going on. The audience seemed to enjoy their program very much. The program then ended with a big clapping from the audience. None could perhaps identify Subir having continued on lip services all the while. The organizers were satisfied at the performance of the artists and gave a memento to all the participants. Like all other artists he was also given a good memento for participating in the program. He was elevated to the status of an artist thought he did neither qualify nor did he deserve for it. But he was fortunate enough to enjoy it only for his being among the artists Sbuir now discovered the old truth 'A man is known by the company he keeps' once again in his life.
